Mercedes reveals future plans for AMG

Add comments

Mercedes has announced its plans for its AMG performance division, with the Black Series of the upcoming E-Class Coupe being the main draw.

AMG has also said that it is no longer interested in engaging in ‘horsepower wars’ with its fellow German rivals, but will focus its AMG models on improving driving dynamics.

The new car will employ weight-saving techniques and fine-tuning of the mechanicals to boost the car’s ability, with the emphasis on improving the car’s agility rather than outright speed.

With the Black Series, Mercedes has thus ruled out a regular AMG version of the E-Class coupe. In contrast, the C-Class will get a ‘normal’ AMG variant, as Mercedes wants to reserve the Black Series label for two door cars only.

The C63 AMG will, however, receive a power boost, with the current model being the least powerful AMG model in the stable, with ‘only’ 457bhp.

“For this performance version you can count on more than 500bhp but less than 525bhp,” said an AMG engineer.

The source also said there are no plans to use the seven-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox from the E63 and SL63 in the C63, despite the fact that it will fit the car.
