this is an all wheel drive system with no center differential locking capabilities which means that if one wheel slips[or the suspension articulates to where one wheel is no longer touching the ground you will stop moving [unless you have a good head of steam before slippage occurs] if you can live with them the ml makes for a fair snow car but even a 4wd toyota double cab pickup [tacoma] has more capabilities both on and off road and toyota’s power windows won’t fail in the down position so spend less and use the residuals to purchase something with a deed instead of a title.

They are NOT always in 4WD! The system that Mercedes puts in the ML is primarily a RWD system that senses slip and when that happens, the transfer case puts engine power and torque to the wheel(s) that have traction. So, actually the car is a rear wheel drive and as such will get better gas mileage than one that is constantly in AWD. Really, if there is no reason to drive all the wheels at all times, then why do it? Some cars/ truck have a power split in their all wheel drive system, like Audi. They run 60% power to the front wheels and 40% to the rear. If you like spending money on gas, then buy a car that is full time AWD.
The Benz is not one of them. I’ve often observed more than 22mpg in my ML320. Can’t say that with my Q7. That’s why I got rid of it.
So, to clarify, the Benz is a AWD system that is at the ready to go into 4WD at any moment. But, if not necessary, the system will only drive the rear wheels.
Hope this info has helped you.
