who has the best engine, BMW vs Mercedes.they say benz engines last for 500,000 miles is that true?
Add commentslooking to purchase a Mercedes CLS 2006 with 50,000 miles, but I like the BMW 645, and notice one with 60,000 miles, as well as the 745, with 70,000 miles. I am trying to figure out who has the best engine with all those miles.

According to Consumer Reports, Mercedes is actually pretty poor in terms of reliability. They rate worse than almost anyone except for maybe Land Rover.
Some of the old diesel Mercedes cars would go forever, but that’s not the case with thier modern cars.
Buy the Bimmer.

Neither will be trouble free and both will be expensive to maintain and repair if something goes wrong. I also highly doubt they’d last 500,000 miles. The 745 and 645 share the same engine. Something to watch out for with these cars. You’ll be getting a $60-80K car for $40-50K. Make sure you can AFFORD to take care of a car that expensive. Labor on these cars is $120+ per hour on top of very expensive parts($800 headlights for example).

Get an Acura or Lexus if you want reliabity. They have the engine that could last the longest on luxcury cars.
BMW usually has the best in handling of the car, powerful and full good in controlling of the car, but modern European luxcury cars have not been good on “reliable” or “Cost saving”.

If you want proper prestige with reliability then the cars to have are Jaguars funnily enough.
Over the last 20 years their reliability and customer satisfaction have outstripped BMW and Mercedes.
Old Merc’s were more than capable of reaching the million mile mark without major trouble. The new ones are quite poor.

Most of the answers are referring to reliability overall, but that’s not what your asking. As far as how long an engine would last is up to the owner, you can have the best engine in the world go only 10k assuming oil was low and never filled, or maybe 40k if you never changed the oil. Nowadays, many engines are capable of that kind of miles, assuming the maintenence is done properly. I’ve actually seen the highest miles on the old 4.0L straight sixes built by chrysler. Mercedes diesel will last a very long time, and yes they build excellent engines. BMW also makes awesome engines, so it’s really up to you, how long they’ll last.
