The car automatically keeps you in the lane and slows you down so you do not hit the car in front of you. Seems to me that even if you can’t simply hit cruise control and sleep your way from New York to Boston with the new E-Series, the technology should be close.

no

Absolutely. I sleep in my Mercedes. Actually, the lane departure feature just warns you, it doesn’t steer the car. Almost though. BMW 7 Series has Sign Recognition that can read traffic signs and relay them to you. Dynamic cruise control keeps your car a safe distance from the car in front of you. A lot of cars have this now, even the Prius. With dynamic cruise, when you’re stopped, it goes again when the car in front of you goes. It’s a small step to have the car tied in to traffic, gps data and intelligence to drive itself. If it wasn’t for legal liability, we’d probably have these cars in 5 years or less.

Nope.

No! You are presuming it will also make your exits and thread its way through traffic and obstructions too. Don’t try it.

of course you can!! make sure the car is running around 80 mph, so you wont feel anything.
p.s. drive alone in a deserted highway to test it first.

Automatic control still means that you have to be on the “alert” watching for trouble. Eningeering a car to do the things they say it would is “marketing ploy”. If the manufacturer agrees to pay if a liability occurs due to equipment failure, you can do what you say. Otherwise, believe in controlling your destiny.
