Sounds like the tranny may be going out. I would seek help from a mechanic.

Need more info…what climate? How many miles? has it been serviced?

There are lots of factors involved with transmission problems, so it is hard to say. But generically if a transmission has a vacuum modulator, which I suspect you have, it may have a vacuum leak, and it may take a few seconds or minutes to build up enough vacuum to activate the modulator. Or you may have slipping clutches….but depends on mileage…

When you wake up in the morning do you jump out of bed and start your day? Neither does your car. Its 27 years old cut her some slack. If you insist on a cheap short term band aid go to a local parts store a buy a quart of Lucas Transfix. Trans fix, not trans X. This stuff softens the clutch’s and seals but I still wouldn’t go on any out of town trips.
