1990 Mercedes E260 auto. Not used for two yrs. When i try to start the car, the engine dies after a few seconds. If i accelarate, the engine dies even quicker. When i press the brake pedal the gearbox is usually unlocked and would allow me to change from P to another drive mode but it refuses to move out of P. What is the problem? Is it the fuel pump not delivering a constant flow of petrol into the engine?

Allowing a car to sit for an extended period of time is extremely bad for it. You should check all systems before trying to starting it again. This includes Oil, Water, Ignition, and Fuel (which is most likely your issue) As for the stalling problem, you may want to try to clean the fuel system. Start small, add HEET water removal fuel addative and then top off the tank with fresh gasoline. Let it sit for a few minutes and then start the car the best you can. If after you have nursed it and nursed it and it still stalls, you may need to try replacing the fuel filter and/or fuel pump.
As for the not coming out of P problem, you may have a clutch/torque converter problem. Try making sure the break fluid is at the approperate level ( I know this works for a hydrostatic clutch system ) Good luck.
