I have a 1998 E200 avantgard saloon with a 3 speed box, I am having problems with it changing up from 2nd to 3rd gear in the morning or when it has been sitting for a while ie:25 minutes or more. If i use manual selection and move the selector from D to 2 and back to D it will change up. Or if i wait a While and watch it rev its nuts out it eventually changes up. once the car is warmed up properly it drives perfectly though. As of yesterday after driving up the M1 it has developed a slight leak from the upper left side of the box dripping onto the exhaust causing smoke.I have checked the fluid level when warm and it is fine.I loath to take it into an autobox centre untill i can gain some idea of what the problem may be.
Can anyone help ??

this sounds like a sticking governer, automatic transmissions decide when to shift based on a balance between two different pressures T.V. Pressure (Throttle valve pressure aka how hard you step on the pedal) vs governer pressure (how fast the car is going) so if you are cruising at say 45 mph, and you stamp on the throttle, the TV pressure goes up, the governer pressure stays the same, so the transmission downshifts and off you go, as you accelerate, the governer pressure increases, until it over-powers the tv pressure, then it up-shifts, so your issue is a governer sticking, and not generating the appropriate line pressure. the governer is typically located in the tailshaft of a transmission, but i am not familiar with your specific model of car, so i cannot really direct you too much, but there is somewhere to start.
hope this helps, let me know if i can be of more assistance
