I have a Mercedes C180 auto 1995 saloon and after washing it as normal on sunday the ABS light stays on after start up and the speedo has stopped working, everything else is working fine,
I have checked all the fuses and don’t know what else to try.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like this car has an electric speedometer, driven by the same wheel speed sensors used by the ABS. Did you dislodge any wires in the area of the front wheels ? Its also possible that water has got into the sensors or wiring connectors. Or that you washed some mud into the toothed rings mounted on the wheel which the sensors use to measure the speed.

My mum had same problem - easily solved - a silver relay under a removable panel on right side under bonnet hinges - unscrew and replace …http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=70496
see the Star Diagnostics guys near Southampton in the replies - we went there and they charged £85? to replace- give them a ring to confirm. Or you might get one from a scrap yard for £20??
