First car a salvage Mercedes?
OK so im 16 and got my license already a while back. they said i have a few options except no mustang camero or any vehicles of those types like sporty…haha :P well i have this car with a salvage title and i already know my parents are willing to fix a salvage car but i want to know is it a smart move? i have a link to the website… http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/REPAIRABLE-REBUILDABLE-SALVAGE-E63-AMG-REAR-HIT-MUST-C_W0QQitemZ250558347107QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item3a5670f763

from the auto check its got salvage but from the pictures can you tell if there’s any frame damage and would it be a hassle to fix it? my parents already love the looks but they don’t know much about its engine..:P i know the asking price is high we can negotiate. If anybody can help soon that would be of great help thanks.

a smart move to get mercedes for first car? of course, but the condition of the car, i’m not so sure bout it though. i don’t know how much it’ll cost for the car to get fixed, but i know it’ll be expensive. both, the right and left quarter panels are smashed, which is the main issue. that is what’s gonna cost more. and the trunk and taillights, you can go to certifit and get it yourself and do it yourself. it not all that difficult to put the trunk and lights on. i know that the quarter panels are gonna cost you another fortune to fix it. i had a 97 3000gt, which is not comparable to the mercedes you want, that got rear ended and it cost me roughly $600/quarter panel. that does not include the trunk and lights. for your case, the car is newer so most likely it’ll be more expensive, but overall, if you think you can do another 5-6 grand for that car, go ahead. hope this help!!

ok, I have owned salvaged cars before, and i thought they were pretty good. Alot of people look down on them, but i don’t. One BIG thing is that it is almost impossible to get full coverage insurance, they don’t do it because once a car is salvaged, it has no real value. My insurance (state farm) said that they needed shop paperwork saying that the damage had been professionally fixed before they would consider insuring one of my cars with full coverage…. I couldn’t come up with the paperwork so i didn’t even have a chance. So if you did get a car like that and did get it fixed up, your pretty much screwed if you hit something or someone…
The other things to think about are…
*They have cashed in on that car (I’m sure the insurance paid for it) and are not willing to fix it, Why is that?
*The way the drivers side back wheel is pushed forward into the wheel well scares me… that’s really bad, axel, suspension and FRAME work!
*They want WAY too much money for it! Now they are just being greedy…
*Frame work is terrible and the car will NEVER be the same! Balding tires, bent spendals, bad bearings… just not worth it.It will be VERY expensive to fix that car…
*I WOULD NOT SUGGEST THAT CAR!!
Tell your parents to buy you a Nissan Versa or something, the Nissan Versa is like 11,000.00 Brand new…You would save money that way…
Good luck, Hope you find a good car.

Yeah there’s frame damage and probably damage to the rear axle(s) (at the minimum vibration damage). Since it’s RWD probably not a good idea. This is why they TOTALLED this vehicle. Otherwise you’d just replace a couple panels and the trunk and have a great used mercedes. Insurance companies total vehicles that have more damage than the car is worth…what does that mean for you? The adjuster believes there’s at least 35k worth of damage to the vehicle…meaning if you do the work yourself it might cost 15k using factory parts not from the dealership. But you can’t fix frame damage, the car will never drive properly.

So…no. If you 30k to drop on your first car buy a 370z, subaru wrx, or lancer ralliart because obviously your parents don’t care how much they’re paying for your insurance.

Edit: There’s definitely rear axle damage on that one wheel. What’s an amg axle cost? No clue. Probably at least 1k…

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carquotes.sinfree.net
