So if a car sees little drive time at high speed would that mean my top gear would be close to brand new?
Add commentsI have a Mercedes 190E 2.6 with the 4G-Tronic 4 speed auto. Since my car was last owned by a guy with kids, I doubt he took it too fast anytime he drove it. Would that also mean that 4th gear would be like brand new since on this car 4th doesn’t see action until you’re going around 100 mph?
Really? I thought the car is in 3rd at regular freeway speeds.

No! All Mercedes will shift into 4th gear during regular acceleration will below 50 mph. When you’re cruising at 50 mph on the street or freeway you’ve been in 4th for a while.

Fourth gear has probably been used a lot. In order to improve fuel economy, the transmission shifts into top gear to minimize engine speed.
Fourth gear would typically be selected anytime you are cruising at a constant speed (minimal engine load) at probably 40 mph or above.
You can see what gear the transmission has selected by noticing how many drops in engine rpm are observed on the tachometer. From a standing start and a constant acceleration, the third rpm drop will indicate 4th gear has been selected.
