I am getting ready to sell my 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 and I would like to have it looking “like new”. I have had an auto detail business tell me they can do that for $200. I’d rather save that money by doing it myself. I can take care of the interior and exterior because I have all the equipment necessary, but am at a loss as to how to safely clean the engine. I am worried if I just spray the engine with a hose, I’ll get water in some of the electrical components.

after i go off roading you cant my whole engine bay is brown covered in mud I just get simple green in a spray bottle or any kind of degreaser spray it everywhere let it sit for a min and then hose it off it makes it almost look new so since your engine shouldnt be that dirty it should do a really good job
oh yeah and dont worry about getting any electrical components wet as long as you havent removed any plastic covers under the hood it will be fine hmm i think even if you removed any covers it would still be fine

don’t bet on water NOT getting into Electrical Componets if u use a hose. a few people i know have had 2 replace sensors because of using a hose - get a few cans of spray Brake kleen & put a piece of cardboard under neathe it..The stuff evaporates quickely..

Another vote for simple green! Also, I think this is common knowledge but some of these questions on here are pretty crazy so fyi make sure your motor is not hot. Clean it after it has cooled down. But then again you are selling it…

If you’re after a really nice clean job take your car to a wand type car wash lift the hood and turn on the soap spray. Clean everything but the insulation under the hood. Don’t let anyone scare you from doing this. There’s not a thing under the hood you will hurt, warp, break, crack or cause any type of electrical problem. I’ve been using this exact cleaning process for 45 yrs. on car and truck engines. Forget messy stinking de-greasing products which still need to be rinsed off with water. The under-hood of your car will have the stench of kerosene when using foaming de-greasing products.
None of them remove absolutely all dirt, oil and grease like a wand car wash. The motor will look like new.
