Is my alternator on it’s way out.?

Add comments

I have a mercedes C220 diesel i have a problem with the battery going flat after about 6 weeks i had the alternator tested with all electrical stuff on and the garage said the alternator is only putting out just over 12 volts would this cause the battery to die after a while. these auto electricians can be costly and i’m fairly broke. any help on this or advice would be grateful.

The normal out put for an alternator is 13.7 - 15 amps. Check to see if it has a Internal regulator,if it does get a new alternator. If not check the regulator first. Some have fuse links on the wires check them also.(bump on wire about 1 inch long). You can go to an auto chain store and they will check it for FREE.

It could be the alternator but with the information you gave I would be more inclined to believe that your battery is not holding a charge. A battery shop should check it for free as well as the alternator.

there is one thing that you could do to check the alternator. turn your car on and take off the power wire on your battery, if your car still runs your alt is fine and your battery is going dead and you just need a battery. i had same problem and it worked for me.
