Why do people still think manuals transmissions are faster than automatics?

Add comments

New manual gearboxes are infinitely slower than the auto boxes in Mercedes, BMW and Lexus. A computer will always make perfect shifts, something that humans cant do(even f1 drivers back in the 80s said it was hard to make perfect shifts all the time and they are a hell of a lot better than your average driver) and the speed they shift at is way way quicker. Hundreths of a second for the auto vs tenths of a second for a human.

There is no way in hell a manual can be faster than the best autos boxes.

You are talking about the best auto box though. If you take the same normal car and let them race the manual will be a little quicker. Because the auto uses torque from the engine to change the gear. Plus in the manual you can hold the gear longer before the shift. Give you a split second of acceleration longer then the auto. However you are right about the best auto gear box to the best manual.

I think …what comes to mind is stall converters.. when racing… normal street racing that is…

Sometimes people misunderstand what people mean when they say things like “manual transmissions are faster than automatics” They may mean that the car may be faster in the 1/4 mile or through the starightaways….
The reason for a manual car to be faster through the 1/4 would be because of more efficient gear ratios for the wieght of the vehicle or the type of power being made by the engine… and of course the mating of that power to the final drive gear ratio..

As far as being able to out shift an automatic… I have never been able to do it…

    Just a thought..

This is why some people say that an automatic is a perfect transmission for a drag strip.

On the other hand if you have a turbo charged engine and the turbo doesn’t spool until 3000 rpms, a person in an automatic is going to have to start from idle to catch up to the person that started the race with a clean 3000 rpm spool and he will hit WOT much sooner. Now if these were superchargers, then that would be a different story.

i think manual transmission cars are faster because you can get a feel of the engines power when overtaking a long trailer truck specially when you down shift to get the full power… while with automatic transmission the computer of the car decides to wait for the proper shifting timing…

In most situations manuals are faster than automatics, mainly because most cars are built for fuel economy not speed. Manuals give you more control over the car so it will be as slow or as fast as the driver. I would probably agree the best autos can be faster than a manual. Another thing to consider is most cars with an automatic will be heavier than the same model with a manual.
