Dear Mercedes Benz Gurus,
I just purchased a 1989 190e with 152,000 miles.
Here are issues I found out.
1) The power drivers seat does not work. It will only slide forward but not backward, and the upper recline does not move forward.
2) The Left Rear power window does not work at all.
3) The Drivers door lock does not Lock/Unlock at all.
4) The headlights flash and a clicking sound under the front passenger dash side occurs when unlocking and locking the car with the passenger door lock key.
5) The hood and car top clear coat has peeled off. I was thinking of a whole car paint job with Earl Scheib or MAACO auto paint. The original paint color is a light blue metallic. I was thinking of having the car repainted to a light metallic grey color. Your thoughts please.
I would like to know what parts (approx. costs) are needed and if I can DIY repair it myself easily.
Any repair ideas please?
Thanks

Go to the parts store and get a good spray contact cleaner and spray the contacts of the power accessories you’re having trouble with. If this doesn’t work, you can try the junkyard or ebay for used replacement electric motors. I think the spray will fix the seat because it works one way but not the other, so we know the electric motor is good. You can pull the door skins off and check for loose wiring for the window and maybe a broken actuator arm or something like that for the door lock issues. Your Benz has more than likely got a relay that unlocks ALL of the doors when you key unlock one of them, so logically I would look at that as the clicking under the dash and possibly for the driver’s unlock not working. Just do some investigation with the spray contact cleaner and a logical visual inspection. Just be careful removing door skins, those little clips that hold the outer edge of the skin onto the door itself are easy to break. Be gentle prying the skin off. OK…with the paint, you get what you pay for!!! Earl Schieb and Maaco are the same thing now. One bought out the other or they merged or something, so the “I’ll paint any car any color” deal is now the “Ambassador Diamond Lustre” deal. And BOTH deals are completely vile and an insult to any paint professional or your Benz. If the body is straight with no rust, a good paint shop will charge you about 2 or 3 grand to do a quality paint job on your car…and it will last long after the diamond lustre will have flaked off and blistered and didn’t look good from the start anyway!!
