are we to blame as much as any president?

i had the most interesting conversation with a man from Iraq at the ford dealership a few minutes ago , he was saying look , there is no blame for bush , no blame for Obama . not Mccain , not Palin , not Clinton , his view was this , sure the presidents do add to the fire of economic woes , but here is the problem in america , you tend to send so much of your economy over seas , half of the people want to drive a Tundra , a Mercedes , a Volvo , and so and so on , the price of these vehicles is so high and the money goes over seas , this is with any foreign product . he also stated that not only is it the American consumers fault but the auto makers , of course people are going to buy a toyota with 40mpg compared to an american vehicle with 19 mpg , if ford made a truck that got 35 mpg , sure who wouldn’t buy one , but for years people have said , buy american , keep the money here and the jobs here , instead we send it all over seas , what can do to bring economic growth back to America . are we going to rely on a president to fix our faults , he can only do so much ! im not sure how many of you have actually been out and seen what is happening right at this very minute , but where i am i am seeing jobs flying out the window left and right this month alone with no end in sight , sure all the bashing of Obama and McCain and Bush is sometimes fun on yahoo , but people we have to come togather somewhere down the road and act like americans , what can we do to achieve this ? how can we once again be brothers and sisters and be proud of who we are ?

‘buy America’ actually had meaning back in the 50s and 60s - in today’s global economy it makes little sense - Many ‘American made’ cars have parts made overseas - many ‘foreign’ cars are manufactured here in the USA

yeah this is soooo true!!!!!! one of the reasons I didn’t like obama… his campaign is all about change.. well guess what, the change needs to come from the ppl, and the government, not just by who is elected president… And I’m not trying to turn this into a political thing, or a anti obama thing, cause I did actually like him… I’m just saying… Hopefully more ppl will start to realize the change needs to come from everyone, not just one man.

Very interesting. I am reminded of the 1970’s when we thought Japan was buying so much in U.S. that they would own us. That’s where we first heard the buy American slogan. But it took the policies of Reagan in the 80’s to bring us out of recession. People need to remember that what drives this country is free enterprise, business people have to have incentive to take BUSINESS RISKS, and that means low or no capital gain tax (China and other financially sucessful countries do not tax businesses highly). We should not punish the sector that drives this economy. There has been recent abuse of our banking sector, let’s learn from mistakes, fix it, but allow an enviroment conducive to attract business ventures. If not, we are screwed. You can not grow an economy from the bottom up—And remember Labor, if you make it too economically unfeasible to do business with a profit—you will drive them elsewhere. And I don’t want to see that.

I think he has a good point, but is taking it a little too far. Sure, politicians are going to get more blame than they deserve, but they are partially responsible for almost everything that happens in this country. Maybe not directly, but the president picks a large number of he higher officials and has influence in the country’s opinion.
