Do you think maybe I should buy a new gas cap?
Help Mercedes 2005 ML 350! Evaporative Emission Control System” Code PO446?
Check engine light came on so I went and borrowed a diagnostic tool from the auto parts store, code PO446, which is evaporative emission control system. After running the test and got the code, I unplugged the battery check engine light came off and the light came on three days later again.
I’ve tried tightening gas cap, don’t know maybe bad cap. Bad gas wouldn’t give the code PO446. Thanks

You may have a bad cap. You may also have a leak in the evap system. Cap will be the cheapest route. Try a new one and see if it cures your problem. If not you may have to have the car smoke tested and see where the leak is at.

Could be the gas cap, sure… Other possibilities include the charcoal canister shut off valve, the canister itself and/or the purge valve up in the engine bay.
As suggested above, the gas cap is an inexpensive item. It certainly won’t hurt to replace it and it may just fix the problem. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to diagnose the problem more closely.
